moving and moving

I haven’t been a proper dj since leaving Victoria a couple years ago.  It’s not something I’ve been interested in as a career even a little bit.  I enjoyed fantastic success, and when it stopped being fun I got out.  That’s how it should be.

Nevertheless, djmischiff.com has been my home on the web since November 2002, several months after 11Stones was torched.  In fact, by the time the blog started I’d already walked away from the full-time dj career.  Wow.  Six years of blogging.  For years I wrote regularly, and with a lot of soul.  The blog was there at a key time in my life, when I was doing a lot of in depth retrospection.  I had a lot of things to work out, and I had a group of friends that seemed interested in being a part of that process.

Most of those issues are behind me.  I have a clear idea of where I want to go.  I’m 37, married and moving to New York.  So it seems fitting to move my home on the interwebs, as well.  I’m not sure I’ll be able to move this entire archive to the new space, but I will make the effort.  djmischiff.com is like my photo albums– precious and irreplaceable.  But it is time to put djmischiff to bed.  In my mind it’s almost like retiring a character.  Maybe there’s something to that.

So consider this the bookmark.  djmischiff.com began when the dj switched to full time at Wondermill.  He was 31 and single, with more dollars than sense, had all sorts of issues to work out, and had no idea what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.  Too many interests and not enough clones.  We bookmark here, with the dj retired, Adrian married and moving to New York to make movies, using every one of those interests.  It’s a charmed life, make no mistake.  I knows it.

It’s July, 2008.  Next book: AdrianTaverner.com

And then, quite suddenly at 6am, mighty mischiff has this to say about that:

He said, “That’s just for starters, and that was just a dare, true story,”

Sold the couches, the tv, the dvd player, my favourite shelves, the Ikea dresser, the Ikea kitchen table & chairs, the two tall paper lamps, the Trivial Pursuit Pop Culture 2 game, the ubiquitous Ikea chair, all my factory cds, the vinyl, and probably a couple things that have slipped my mind.

• 2 bean bag chairs - bright vinyl covers, still firmly stuffed

• towels - all fluffy, all in perfect or near perfect condition

nVIDIA GF4 MX440SE/SDR with tv & 2nd monitor out
2 other generics, 1 with video out, the other with 2nd monitor out

Don’t be shy.  Pricing is obviously stupid low.  Make me offers.  Email me.  It’s all gotta go!

take my life, please!

Posted on Sunday 6 July 2008

No, no, I’m not contemplating suicide.  And I’m not so much downsizing as full-on getting rid of everything.  I plan on moving to NYC with my photos, my laptop, a handfull of books and my Lego.  And some clothes.  I think that’s it.

So.  That leaves:

- bookshelves,

- a bajillion tea lights and half a bajillion glass tea light holders,

- computer desk,

- bed,

- dressers,

- more shelves,

- lamps (not counting what Cara has claimed),

- a tired but serviceable couch,

- an Ikea loveseat/ double bed,

- a very comfy Ikea chair,

- two and a half boxes of comics,

- the tv (a higher-end 27″ Sony Wega CRT),

- DVD player,

- 200 watt Technics Dolby 5.1 surround component stereo with 5 disc carousel and dual tape deck,

- a Pioneer shelf stereo,

- a bitterly hated but otherwise perfectly good one year old HP PC,

- Canon printer,

- a shopping bag of computer parts (including one year old mid-range graphics card, RAM and dozens of other goodies),

- a dazzling collection of keyrings from the 80s (shut up!  I was a collector)

- the computer desk with sidecar two-drawer cabinet

- a really big planter pot, brick red

- four really good folding office chairs

- various and numerous Ikea picture frames

- a couple hundred books

- kitchen stuff, towels, and various other household miscellany

- drumroll please - my Hawaiian shirts.  Maybe I’ll raffle those off for funzies.

Some things, like the couch, will have to wait til I’m done with them nearer the end of the month, but if there’s anything you’re at all interested in knowing more about, don’t hesitate to get in touch.  Don’t wait!  I’m going to start hammering craigslist in pretty short order, but my peeps get first crack.  It’s me, so you know everything is in great condition.

Of course, you could wait to see if it doesn’t move, in which case you can swing by on the 1st and pick it up from beside the dumpster.  Everything must go.  No reasonable offers refused.  Blah blah.

Also, coming soon- souvenir parties- come for the sociable good times, take something home with you.  Wheeeeee!

Get in touch right away- commenting is disabled for now but my email’s at the top of this page, or we’re probably FB friends, or my number is already in your cell phone.

I share a world record

Posted on Thursday 3 July 2008

On June 17, 2008, over eight million people downloaded Firefox 3, the open-source browser phenom that has Internet Explorer’s head spinning, and Microsoft, once again, wondering what’s going on.

I was one of the eight million, which puts me in the Guinness Book of World Records.  True story.

Download-Day-2008.jpg

If you are still one of the lost & confused using IE, you have to believe me when I say that life can be better.  Firefox is easier to use, easier to customize, more pleasant to look at, and safer.  So much safer.  Over 180 million people agree.  Go get Firefox.

I think this is the first time I’ve ever struck me as looking like my dad.  Interesting.  I wonder what that means?

fulgurating hell!

Posted on Saturday 28 June 2008

Imagine taking a fun snap of, say, your girlfriend, posing in front of, I don’t know, the Grand Canyon.  Nice.  You later dump the pics to your computer and your mind is blown out of the water because, right there in plain sight, is a giant ad for McDonalds splattered in 300 foot high letters across the canyon wall.  Weird that you didn’t notice it when you were taking the pic, yeah?

Blame this guy for the ultimate death of meaningful photography.  His camera will sneak images into your pics, and you won’t even notice til you get home.  It’s clever.  The camera senses your flash, and strobes an image onto a surface, presumably in the field of view of your camera.  A harmless enough idea for pranksters sneaking boobies into grad photos, but imagine the ruin this will make of your tourist photos, or sports shots, or just about anywhere else an advertiser thinks he can snag eyeballs.  And not just legitimate brands.  The dolphin tank at the zoo will be spammed by buttmunchersdotcom, and there’s not a damn thing anybody can do about it until someone sees the pics, and by then the spammer will have moved his ambush onward.

So either avoid using a flash (which is good advice anyway, because damn, dude, on-camera flashes don’t do anyone any favours), or shoot in bursts and hope that you get at least one useable frame out of it.

There has to be a limit to just how far we have to put up with a market economy.  Spammers must die, and I want my carefully composed pic of Mt Rushmore to be mine, not Nikes.

George Carlin

Posted on Monday 23 June 2008

George Carlin [imdb] died June 22, 2008.  You will be missed.  I think you were vastly underappreciated in your time, and I think it’s because what you had to say too frequently struck too close to home.  Rest assured- you had influence.

George Carlin one-liners here.

George Carlin Wikipedia entry here.

George Carlin’s website here.

More George Carlin one-liners here.

A ton of George Carlin on YouTube here.

Rest in peace.  You did your best, and didn’t fail nearly so much as you probably thought.
